OSRAM Announces Layoffs

This announcement from Osram was sent out to its media partners today.

Today we have informed our employees, that Osram is planning a reduction of 250-290 jobs in its Lighting Solutions (LS) Business Unit over the next two years. These measures affect the Siteco site in Traunreut, Germany, in particular, which, through these, will be restored to competitiveness. These adjustments are primarily due to the continued negative results in the business unit, as a result of the cost structure in both production and administration, as well as the shift in demand from traditional to LED-based products, which now make up 80% of LS’s business. LED-based products require considerably fewer production stages and, as such, less personnel for their production.

The reduction of jobs will be done in a way that is as socially responsible as possible. This also means that any applications by Traunreut employees for positions at Osram’s Regensburg site will be considered preferentially. 1,000 new positions are to be created in the opto semiconductor business (OS) in Regensburg in the coming years.

In order to future-proof the Traunreut site, targeted investments to modernise production are also planned, among other measures.
