Lighting Design Summer School
Monday 21 July – Friday 25 July, 2014.
Rose Bruford College, Sidcup, UK.
Every year, Rose Bruford College of theatre & performance, organises a number of summer schools.
Aims of the Course
This one week course is based around one play and is equally suited to those with some Lighting experience wishing to improve or extend their skills, as well as to those with limited experience, wishing to explore the work of the Lighting Designer. The programme will, therefore, prove invaluable to those wishing to take their first steps into the profession or for those applying to related courses.
The course aims to enable each student to develop their Design and Implementation skills, to engage in the practice and presentation of dramatic text, its development through the Lighting medium and to increase their understanding of the role of Lighting in Performance, Dramaturgy and Scenography as well as becoming a valuable member of a creative team.
Course Content
The course will include a programme of stimulating and challenging classes and practical workshops in:
Light – helping the Designer to acquire understanding of the nature and attributes of light.
Perceptions – teaching the Designer to be aware of perceptual mechanisms and how the audience or spectator engage visually with a scene or performance.
Design – practical exercises to extend the Designers’ imagination and to create a Design response to received or found stimuli.
Research – processes and tools to place design within cultural, temporal, spatial and emotional landscapes.
Practical Implementation – workshops and lectures exploring the tools, materials and the Health and Safety issues surrounding the work of the Lighting Designer.
Students will be working on one text: Bertolt Brecht’s Baal. It is essential to have a good understanding of the piece before the course begins. The week is given over to creating a scale Design presentation of the Lighting of the play, leading to a presentation
Throughout these projects, students will explore Light, Perceptions and Practical and Design processes.
