Light Painting World Alliance Celebrates the International Year of Light
In Oviedo, Spain, 33 light painters from the Light Painting World Alliance gathered to re-create the International Year of Light logo with light and long-exposure cameras.
As part of the 1st International Light Art Congress,in Oviedo, Spain, the Light Painting World Alliance (LPWA) contributed to a community art experience by using light to paint the IYL2015 logo on Plaza de la Gesta in Oviedo, Spain.

After setting up markers to outline the logo’s components, the team used long-exposure cameras on 15-foot lifts to capture every streak drawn with light tools. Thirty-three light painters were involved in the creation, which measures a massive 44 meters in diameter.
The International Year of Light and Light-based Technology 2015 (IYL2015) is a global initiative adopted by the United Nations to raise awareness of how optical technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to worldwide challenges in energy, education, agriculture, communications and health. The IYL reaches beyond science and technology. Light is the means by which humanity sees itself, it has inspired art, music, literature, and philosophy across the centuries.
With this recognition, we very much welcome the recent involvement of artistic communities, such as the Light Painting World Alliance (LPWA), in IYL2015. The Light Painting World Alliance is a community of light painters across the globe that work both independently and in cooperative groups to create incredible works of art that are invisible to the human eye.
The International Year logo itself was very carefully designed to include many different elements such as the centrality of light to life, science, internationalism and art. The wonderful light painting display at Oviedo is a perfect example of how the science of illumination technology can combine with artistic design to create works of beauty and inspiration, and raise awareness of the International Year of Light and its goals.
