Eurovision Song Contest In a New Light
The 2015 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest will be held this weekend in Vienna. Thanks to lighting manufacturer Osram, effect spots will create fascinating stage shows and the intelligent Lightify light system will get the audience involved in the European Village public viewing area. “With our light systems we turn the world’s largest entertainment spectacle into the largest lighting technology event”, commented Hans-Joachim Schwabe, CEO of Special Lighting at Osram.
Last year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen saw colossal video screens as the main focus of the show, and this year the Vienna organisers demonstrate how classic stage design can be optimally combined with high-end lighting technology. The defining element will be the extensive use of ‘moving heads’ from the Osram subsidiary Clay Paky. These luminaires, featuring mobile head units with omnidirectional rotation, create impressive colour effects, projections and light rays adapted to the music.
In addition, Osram technology will also play a part in the European Village public viewing event. Up to 20,000 visitors will be following the preliminary rounds as well as the final competition live each day on Vienna’s town hall square over a complete week, and will be demonstrating their support for the performance of each artist by voting. An app for Osram’s intelligent Lightify lighting system has been adapted to implement the voting process. Timon Rupp, responsible for the Lightify business at Osram, explains: “The visitors will be bathing the square with breathtaking Lightify colour chases depending on the voting results, thus giving the major event a further emotional touch.”
The Eurovision Song Contest takes place from 17 to 23 May in Vienna, and the final competition begins on 23 May at 9 p.m. Information on the illumination of the Eurovision Song Contest is available during the entire week in realtime via hashtag #takethefeelinghome on Twitter.
